Tim Halonen – July’s Masterclass: Part Number Inventory Management
In today’s session, we’re covering an overview of part number inventory, make-to-stock work orders, and fulfill-from-stock work orders, with a Q&A at the end. Inside the Steelhead domain under Inventory, we have two main areas: inventory types and inventory items. Inventory items are specific parts—such as tapes, paints, powders, or part numbers—while inventory types group those items together. From the inventory type “Part Number,” we can add items by selecting an existing part number or creating a new one. We can define a process, set a source operation if needed, and choose whether the item is purchasable. Purchasable items are bought from vendors, while non-purchasable items are created in-house. Low-stock alerts can also be set to notify when quantities drop below the desired level.
Once an item is saved, we can see stock on hand, demand, projected stock, and alert thresholds. If the item is purchasable, a purchase order can be created directly from it. When the PO is sent and received, quantities move from “on order” to “on hand.” Low inventory control features help determine if more needs to be ordered or produced based on projected demand.
For make-to-stock workflows, a sales order is created with the “make to stock” option. Production completes the parts and moves them into inventory with a name, description, and location. Fulfill-from-stock orders pull completed parts from inventory, assign them to shipping, and invoice accordingly. Different industries will use these workflows in different ways, and the system also supports Bill of Materials assembly tracking. For example, a table may require four legs and one tabletop, with the BOM showing what’s on hand, what’s on order, and what’s still needed.
That concludes the demo on part number inventory management. Please drop any questions in the chat.
